Launched on July 28, 2020, The Naturalist Update introduced a fifth role, focusing on players engaging in the tracking, study, and hunting of animals. Alongside this addition came new outfits, animals, and an Outlaw Pass. The development team, impressed by the success of the single-player animal hunting mechanics, aimed to replicate the experience seamlessly in Red Dead Online.
A notable feature, the Vitalism Studies of the Naturalist, allowed players to temporarily control animals, providing a surreal experience that deviated from the otherwise realistic tone of the game.
In celebration of Halloween in October 2020, Rockstar introduced the Dead of Night mode, pitting players against zombies. The limited-time Halloween Pass, available from October 20 to November 16, included various spooky rewards such as horse masks, emotes, and weapon variations. The team believed that these events captured some of the enigmatic elements present in the single-player version.
Simultaneously released with the standalone client in December 2020, the Bounty Hunters update expanded the bounty hunter role with new ranks, three additional targets, and a fresh Outlaw Pass with bonus items. Christmas 2020 brought back the Snowfall, accompanied by an extra weapon and gun variant. On February 16, 2021, three solo missions were introduced, with Rockstar expressing intentions to add more in subsequent updates. Finally, on May 25, 2021, eight horse races were incorporated into the game.
Blood Money came out on July 13, 2021, following prior details in May and June, and an official announcement with a trailer on July 6 and 7.
The update introduced missions centered around the criminal underworld, tasking players with assisting Guido Martelli in establishing his own criminal network in Saint-Denis. The developers aimed to provide enhanced criminal experiences, incorporating Martelli a character referenced in single-player mode to maintain consistency between the two modes.
