Red Dead Online received post-release content through free updates that aimed to gradually evolve the game world. Rockstar's plan included expanding players' in-game businesses, progressing from small camps to larger companies. The focus was on introducing more role-playing elements over time, including additional roles and missions. One significant challenge for the development team was incorporating experiences that offered player freedom without imposing too much structure.
In December 2018, the first update featured saloons playing Christmas music. The full release in May 2019 brought a comprehensive update with new story missions, dynamic events, free roam activities, and the addition of poker to the game.
The Frontier Pursuits update, released on September 10, 2019, introduced three new roles: bounty hunter, trader, and collector. These roles allowed players to engage in high-stakes action as bounty hunters or explore the world at a slower pace as collectors. The development team responded to player requests for a deeper connection to their characters, aiming to provide a personalized experience in the open world.
The trajectory of the roles intentionally progressed at a slower pace than Grand Theft Auto Online's missions, with each role designed to have logical successors, gradually advancing players' financial success. The update also included an Outlaw Pass, offering additional in-game rewards for a price, and the Wheeler, Rawson & Co Club, a limited-time promotion with specific unlockable rewards as players gained experience.
Each role assigned players special tasks for a limited time, such as Legendary Bounties for bounty hunters and specific items for collectors. Halloween in October and November featured the limited event Fear of the Dark, dividing players into Hunters and Night Stalkers. The Moonshiners update, added on December 13, 2019, extended the trader role with a focus on producing, managing, and distributing moonshine. The update introduced additional content, including the first purchasable property and a new Outlaw Pass. To celebrate Christmas in December 2019, Rockstar provided free supplies to players and added a temporary period of snowfall.
