Gameplay Overview

Players have the option to set up temporary camps throughout the game world for individual use or for their posse. These camps serve as hubs for rest, wardrobe access, crafting, cooking, and fast-travel. Horses play a crucial role in transportation, with different breeds featuring distinct attributes. Players need to train or tame wild horses, initiating a bonding process that improves through care and attention. Horses must be insured for healing and respawn purposes.

The game world is scattered with story missions involving four players collaborating on tasks to progress the narrative. Additionally, events accommodating up to 32 players, either individually or in posse groups, offer diverse challenges such as firearm-free deathmatches and horseback races. Players are notified of competitive events and can choose to travel there immediately or join specific events at their discretion. Outside events, non-player characters ("strangers") present missions like contract killings or camp raids. Temporary posse groups of up to four players can form during a game session, while a fee allows up to seven players to join a persistent posse that regenerates when the leader comes online. Within a persistent posse, players can customize the group's style and track player stats. To prevent friendly fire, teammates can disable it, and if two players engage in persistent conflict, the game offers the options of "parley" or "feud."

Red Dead Online introduces additional systems not found in the single-player mode. In addition to in-game cash, players use gold as a second currency for luxury and special items. Tokens, earned by unlocking role ranks, can be used to purchase role-specific items. Gold nuggets, acquired through challenges, can be converted into gold bars. Unlike the single-player mode, online players can order supplies from a handheld catalog, available for pickup at any town's post office or the player's camp. The game features "ability cards" that grant active and passive powers, obtainable through ranking up or direct purchase, and upgradable using in-game currency and experience points.

The multiplayer experience incorporates the Honor system from the single-player story, evaluating players' actions in terms of morality. Positive deeds, such as helping strangers and obeying the law, increase Honor, while negative actions, like theft and harming innocents, decrease it. Certain story missions are accessible only when the player's Honor reaches a specific level.
